Here are a few things you might not have thought about:

  • Usually, e-Learning takes up only about 40-50% of learners’ time compared with Instructor-Led Training covering the same topics. That means that learners lose much less work time, and that adds up to big savings.
  • When you provide workshop training, you’re limited by the size and number of classrooms you have, the number of trainers, and the number and location of employees. If you’ve ever planned the training schedule for a big initiative, you know that it’s quite a feat. You may have to start training 4 or 6 weeks before the roll out, just to make sure everyone gets through in time.

What do you think happens to the knowledge or skills that people learn, but can’t use for 6 weeks?

And we haven’t even considered the cost of maintaining those training rooms and trainers, and flying people around, giving them a place to stay, and feeding them.

With e-Learning, everyone can get the training they need, right when they need it, without going anywhere.

  • In a really good workshop, with a relatively small number of learners, how many times do you think each individual gets to engage in a meaningful learning interaction—for example, applying some principle, thinking through a scenario, identifying product features and benefits? Not just nodding along with a group discussion.

Maybe once or twice a day? Ten times a day?

With e-Learning done well—and this is not automatic—each individual can engage in 10 or 20 meaningful interactions each hour. Plus they get immediate, targeted feedback on every one of them.

  • After a workshop, what happens when learners need to refresh on something? They might still have the binder from class. And it might still be up-to-date.

Or, they can just revisit the e-Learning module that covered that topic. If the content has been updated, they’ll access the new version automatically, and have the information they need right at their fingertips.
